This year’s season of the Polárka Theater is called All five together. The show Adventures in No Man’s Land makes the audience realize that being together with the right group means experiencing unforgettable adventures. When we have someone we trust by our side, we don’t have to be afraid to go on a journey to No Man’s Land and face all its pitfalls just like Vláďa and Vincek, who Foglar’s story follows as they search for the mysterious Cave of Giant Trilobites.
Why did the creative team choose one of the late Foglarovka and what does it offer to our current viewers? The director of the production, Filip Nuckolls, answers: “An atmospheric story from a gloomy, dimly lit autumn city and an extraordinary summer landscape bathed in sun. Humor and insight. The energy of young people who are still completely convinced that they can change the world through their activity. A world of friendship, nobility and cruel justice. Although the book Adventures in No Man’s Land was written at the end of the sixties and it is acknowledged in it, for example, television is now widely available, we return our story to the golden thirties, which always breathe on me a trace of poetic playfulness. That’s what we’re trying to do in the production as well.”

For the production, the creative team chose a special scenographic solution, in the first part the audience sits on the stage and watches between the seats of the auditorium, in which it takes place as if in the intricate streets of the city. “One of the first ideas behind the creation of the production was the desire to encourage the audience to get up from their chairs and go to the streets to experience something. Originally, the director of Nuckolls really intended to send the audience out of the theater for a fight. Finally, it will offer the audience the opportunity to experience an adventure in the hall between the theater seats. After the first half of the production, they will become the actors of the Terasy race, which is legendary for Foglar’s readers,” explains Marie Bravencová, head of Polárka Theater’s Small Car.
“Jaroslav Foglar’s memorial at the Polárka Theater aims to show that adventure is not found in technology, distant destinations or lots of money. But that it is waiting for us behind the last houses, in city corners and brownfields, in the neighborhood and sometimes right on our street. But you have to look for it and see it. Just as it is necessary to search for friendship, freedom and justice throughout life,” adds Filip Nuckolls.

Filip Nuckolls, former head of the Drama Studio from Ústí nad Labem and frequent director of the Kašpar Society in Prague from the Theater in Celetná, is directing in Polárka for the third time. As with his previous production The Process, the artist Jan C. Löbl and the musician Ondřej Švandrlík collaborate on Adventure in Nobody’s Land. The dramatization of Foglar’s novel for Polárka was written by the director Nuckolls himself, because Foglar’s books are close to him and he himself was a member of the Young Broadcaster’s Club in his teens.
Adventure in Nobody’s Land will premiere on December 10, 2022. We will see Vít Malech and Jaroslav Tomáš in the lead roles of the boys Vládi and Vincko, and almost the entire ensemble of Polárka Theater will perform together with them. The performance is intended for viewers aged nine and over and their parents.
