Meteo France. Here’s why there will be no more avalanche alerts in Toulouse (and that’s very serious)

“End the Place du Capitole in Toulouse on the alert Avalanches of orange! Launch today of the French Weather Vigilance in infra-departmental mode for certain phenomena”, commented on twitter this Monday, November 28, 2022, with a zest of humor, Sébastien Brana, a weather specialist.
Refined forecasts
Beyond this joke at the start of the week (there have been no more avalanches in Toulouse since ice age…), there’s a change very serious in terms of weather alerts which have just been carried out by Météo France and which should make it possible to better understand extreme weather phenomena in the future.
Météo France has, in fact, assessed the functioning of its vigilance map. The latter, which is used to warn of a more or less important and dangerous meteorological hazard in a department, thanks to an increasing color code (green, yellow, orange and red), becomes infra-departmental.
Avalanches at risk
This means that, from now on, certain weather alerts will be announced area by area. In other words, only the area directly concerned will be colored on the map.
For the time being, this mode of operation concerns only two hazards: the wave-submersion risk and the avalanches at risk.
Concrete example this Tuesday morning in Haute-Garonne. Following the snowfall recorded in the mountains, only part of the department is on yellow alert for avalanches, whereas a few days ago the whole department would have been placed on yellow alert.
Here is why, in fact, Toulouse and the plain will probably never again be concerned by avalanche vigilance from Météo France.
