Toulouse: the Albanian camp on the banks of the Garonne in Empalot evacuated this Tuesday morning
In early November, the administrative court of Toulouse had ordered the eviction of this shantytown on the banks of the Garonne at Empalot. The occupants of Albanian origin had fifteen days to vacate the premises. The evacuation of the remaining families took place this Tuesday morning at first hour.
This Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. several CRS contingents deployed in the illegal camp of Albanian migrants to expel them. The evacuation was done calmly. According to our information on their arrival, several dozen occupants in an irregular situation left. Those who remained, about twenty people, had an administrative situation being processed. They were able to be relocated. The slum is nothing more than a heap of odds and ends. The cleaning has started.
This camp had been home to 52 Albanian families for months. At the beginning of November, the administrative court of Toulouse ordered their expulsion. “In this case, after noting that the D3 dyke, a dependency of the Garonne river public domain occupied without right or title, was State property, the judge in chambers noted that, at least since 19 July 2022, this space was occupied by a group of around 90 people, representing around twenty families, including many children, some of them very young”, indicates the administrative court.
According to him, this camp made of light constructions made of recycled material, basic tents and tarpaulins, was “installed on land devoid of any suitable equipment in terms of hygiene and safety”. “Two areas, at the reduced camp, received a multitude of waste and rubbish. The unsanitary conditions of this camp are detrimental to the health of the occupants. In addition, the land is located in a flood zone and has no protection such as to avoid the risk of falls from the dike or drowning when the occupants have many children.
The works prevented
The administrative court also relied on another element: the existence of this slum prevents the continuation of the work planned on the dikes as part of the Grand Parc Garonne development operation carried out by Toulouse Métropole.
