Bilbao starts work on the second pedestrian walkway that will connect Artxanda with Elorrieta and the Paseo de El Canal
BILBAO, 29 Nov. (EUROPEAN PRESS) –
Bilbao City Council has begun construction work on the second of the wooden pedestrian walkways that will connect Artxanda with the Green Belt and the Ría. This second itinerary will specifically link Monte Cabras with the Elorrieta neighborhood and the new El Canal promenade.
Through a statement, the Consistory has informed that the work has a budget of 1,573,986.36 euros (without VAT) and an execution period of eight months.
The pedestrian walkway will be 1,286 meters long and will have a minimum obstacle-free width of two meters, as well as a maximum slope of 8%.
In this way, the two wooden walkways designed by the City Council for Artxanda are already underway and their construction represents the connection between the Green Belt and the Ría, through two accessible pedestrian itineraries that will integrate and bring this environment closer to Zorrotzaurre and to the rest of the city.
The two footbridges start in the same place: the existing pedestrian bridge over the BI-604 highway, in the vicinity of the Colegio de las Esclavas de Fátima.
The first of them, whose works began at the beginning of November, will ascend to the top of Mount Banderas, to continue its itinerary through Berriz bidea, until its connection with the Paseo Mirador de Artxanda. In total, 1.5 kilometers in length.
The second route will pass through the slope of Monte Cabras and reach Elorrieta, where it will connect with another pedestrian itinerary: the Ibarrekolanda Path.
Both arteries, supported on isolated pillars, will be built entirely of wood and will be equipped with lighting.
They will also have a minimum obstacle-free width of two meters and a maximum slope of 8%, always having a handrail and double handrail.
Each of them will also have two viewpoints from which to rest and be able to contemplate the panoramic view of the city. The railing on the front of the viewpoints will be made of laminated and tempered glass, to facilitate the view of the landscape for everyone, regardless of their condition.
The execution of the work aims to be “as respectful as possible with the natural environment” in which it is located. For this reason, the works will be carried out mainly manually and, if necessary, the machinery to be used will be small and compatible with the steep slopes of the land.
