Broken windows, torched cars. Brussels and Antwerp looked like a war zone on Sunday. Riots broke out in the streets of cities after Belgium’s footballers unexpectedly lost to Morocco at the World Cup in Qatar.

Moroccans living in Brussels and Antwerp took to the streets to celebrate a sensational 2-0 victory over the Belgians. Fans started fires, smashed shop windows, lit flares and threw bricks at cars.
The police had to deploy water cannons and tear gas against the rioters to disperse the crowd. The riots paralyzed the centers of both cities, public transport had to be stopped.

“I have ordered the police to act tough already. Therefore, I recommend supporters not to go to the center. The police do everything to maintain public order. I strongly condemn the incidents that occurred,” said the mayor of the metropolis, Philippe Close, according to the British the Daily Mail website.
