Kilometers of chains, hundreds of balls. A tree will light up on the Old Town Square
“In connection with the lighting of the Christmas tree on the Old Town Square, the police have prepared security measures, they will supervise the observance of public order and ensure the event runs smoothly,” regional police spokesman Richard Hrdina told iDNES.cz.
Although the Christmas tree will be lit officially on Saturday at 4 p.m., a rehearsal was held on Friday in the late afternoon. “Everything went according to plan, so Prague residents and visitors to the metropolis can look forward to a real Christmas atmosphere,” commented Petra Macháčková from the municipal company Technology of the Capital City of Prague (THMP).
This year, the tree is decorated with six kilometers of Christmas chains, 80 stars in two sizes and 170 Christmas balls in the colors of the capital, gold and red.
The spire at the top is two meters high. THMP pays attention to energy consumption, so it used modern LED lighting that has energy consumption. According to Macháčková, only for a hundred kroner a day. The tree will be lit every day between 4pm and midnight until Three Kings.
In addition, every day from 4:30 p.m. and then every half hour until 9:30 p.m., there will be a tree-lighting animation accompanied by musical accompaniment.
The spruce is 25 meters tall and grew for 58 years in the village of Kytlice in Děčínsk. It had to be cut down for safety reasons. The tree was chosen by the company Taiko, which runs markets on the Old Town Square. This year, people sent her 26 tips.
The tree was cut down by a master lumberjack last Sunday AND he headed to Prague on Tuesday night. “Many thanks to the Police of the Czech Republic and the Municipal Police of Hl. m of Prague, who helped us a lot with the transport of excessive cargo to the Old Town Square and, in particular, with the towing of 15 vehicles that did not respect the stopping ban and obstructed the passage of the convoy,” said the Chairman of the Board of Directors of THMP Tomáš Jílek.
