They virtually went to the grave of the founder of nursing and donated blood
Want to try drawing blood from a vein? See how an injury is masked, like a cut finger? Or learn to feel a tumor in the breast on realistic models? All this and much more will be experienced by visitors to today’s open doors at the Secondary Medical School Brno, Jaselská, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year. The open day takes place on Saturday, November 26, from ten o’clock to four in the afternoon. On the occasion of its anniversary, the school organizes a number of other activities.

Last week, our school announced the competition “Virtual march to the grave of Florence Nightingale” – the English founder of nursing. The purpose of the event is to encourage pupils and pedagogy to be active – walking, running, etc. The kilometers traveled will be added up and recorded by individual classes, the most active class will be rewarded.
We believe that the original route from Brno to East Wellow (to the grave of Florence), which is approximately 1812 km long, will be overcome several times by our pupils and teachers.

At the beginning of November, 63 pupils and supporters of the school took turns at the Transfusion Department of the University Hospital of St. Anna with the aim of donating blood as primary donors and thus contributing to saving the lives of many people. Out of this number, 42 donors actually donated blood, the others mostly could not undergo blood sampling due to low blood count values. We also consider this figure to be a great success, which was also confirmed by the director of U Svatá Anna hospital Vlastimil Vajdák.
Our goal is to reach the symbolic number of 75 donors – the number of years of the school’s existence – and, thanks to the interest of the still-underage pupils, to repeat the event in February next year. Our assumption was also confirmed that many students would have liked to donate blood earlier, but did not dare to do so themselves. Therefore, they welcomed the event organized by the school and were also very proud of themselves.

During the Open Door Day, those interested in studying practical nursing, lyceum, social activities and their parents will have the opportunity to experience a number of teaching activities firsthand. They can try out how their studies and professional practice will go, for example, in specialist classrooms, where you can take blood from a vein on models, measure your own blood sugar level, blood pressure and more.
On realistic models, you will learn how to feel a tumor in the breast, or you can try working with an electronic figure that reacts according to the entered programs in the same way as the patient. Interested parties will see the attractive masking of injuries up close!
In the psychology classroom, a little respite awaits students, in a pleasant environment they can relax by candlelight, practice yoga, try ringing Tibetan bowls, experience the feeling of old age in a special suit and many other things. Interesting activities are also prepared for students in the chemistry, physics, gym and other classrooms.
