Percy Jackson: 10 hilarious tweets that sum up the series
As fans eagerly awaited the release of the Disney+ series Percy Jackson and the Olympians in 2024, they were surprised to learn that Rick Riordan is revisiting the series. A new novel, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Chalice of the Gods, is slated for release on September 26.
The announcement sent hordes of fans into overdrive, as they revisit the original series in preparation for release. In the process, these fans made some pretty hilarious tweets that can sum up the entire Percy Jackson series perfectly.
It features a cast of unlikely outsiders
The entire cast of Percy Jackson is made up of absolute underdogs. While some intentionally painted themselves as underdogs, like Jason, Percy Jackson was at the bottom of the ladder from the start, making his rise to Camp Half-Blood quite incredible.
Percy Jackson can be summed up as a character who never expected to matter to camp, which is why it makes so much sense that Clarisse would immediately start going after him. It’s easy to play with confused kids, and Percy got confused at first.
Incredible titles
Percy Jackson’s books are full of hilarious chapter titles. Tracks like “I Accidently Vaporize My Pre-Algebra Teacher”, “A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers” or “I Wrestle Santa’s Evil Twin” are captivating and provide a nice contrast to The Titan’s Curse or The Sea of Monsters.
It shows the juxtaposition within the series. While it features iconic and dark Percy Jackson moments, it also has moments of levity that keep fans from getting too bogged down by the tragedy of the show. Instead, it allows them to lodge on the light.
The absurd villains
In Percy Jackson, the gods are not friendly or benevolent characters. Instead, they look at kids like Percy and immediately decide to make their lives as difficult as possible. Ares, more than likely, delighted to torment and almost kill Percy.
It shows how lonely the half-bloods were. Facing villains like Medusa or Ares at 12, they really had to struggle to stay alive. After all, with Ares fighting children, it was impossible not to grow up fast.
horrible parenthood
Godly Percy Jackson parents tend to have responsibilities beyond their children. One thing fans should know about Camp Half-Blood is that most of the original demigods were never even claimed by their divine parent, which leaves them apathetic.
So while Percy had a slight relationship with Poseidon, it wasn’t a strong one. At best, Poseidon functioned pretending to care, while Percy desperately tried to gain support in his various quests.
The gods must deal with the whims of the child heroes
Yet while the gods may have cared little for their offspring, Percy was never going to let this pass without a fight. When offered a bargain, he took it. Instead, he commanded all godly parents to make at least an effort to help their children by claiming them.
It was a major struggle for Poseidon and the other gods, who ultimately had to watch out for their children. While that was the bare minimum they could do, it didn’t mean Poseidon and Zeus were perfectly happy to argue with the gods to do their jobs as parents.
Zeus treatment of a child
The gods rarely tended to pay attention to the fact that Percy and the other demigods were literally children. Despite the fact that Percy had no way of even knowing that gods existed, he was thrust into a conflict between immortals when he was 12 years old.
While the stakes were life or death for Percy, the situation was objectively hilarious, given how ridiculous it was for Zeus to blame Percy. As a little boy, there was no way Percy would have sneaked into Olympus, let alone stolen the lightning bolt.
Heroes should never be left alone
Considering everything Percy had been through, there was no way he would be comfortable being one-on-one with a professor. After all, Percy was paranoid for a reason, and with all the monsters in the world out to hunt him down, it was only fair to worry.
A word of advice for those just starting the Percy Jackson series is that whenever Percy is alone with someone, something will go horribly wrong. His life is a chaotic mess, and he knows it and has learned to go with the flow. So if a teacher takes him aside, Percy expects the world to explode.
A brilliant love story
When given a chance at immortality, most people would either claim it or reject it out of practicality. After all, who wants to live forever? Yet when Percy Jackson denied the gift of immortality, it was not a practical decision. Instead, he did it out of love.
After defeating Kronos, Percy decided he’d rather live a life with Annabeth than an eternity without her. It was especially touching, since they hadn’t even started dating yet. He just knew that he loved her and that he wouldn’t live alone.
They stopped caring about the gods
Percy Jackson has brilliant characters, and each of them has gone beyond the point of caring about propriety. After so many tragedies and so many quests, each of them is simply tired of dealing with the gods or their fellow demigods.
Percy, in particular, has come to find the gods particularly unimpressive. So if they ask for a date with him, he tends to agree, but that doesn’t mean he’ll comply. Usually it will try to find hints for their commands anyway.
The demigods never had a chance
It was pretty ridiculous that Zeus despised Percy as much as he did. After all, Percy was little more than a boy trying to survive against an endless barrage of monsters. To Zeus, accusing and hating him was as ridiculous as the gods expected Percy to accept solitary immortality.
As @nocontextpjo points out, Percy entered The Lightning Thief story with no way of knowing that gods even existed. That he survived it all was impressive, especially with so many people for his head.
