the troubled past of one of the operators of the Cross Gris-Nez

This is a new element that combines the profile of one of the operators of the regional operational center for surveillance and rescue (Cross) in Gris-Nez. Revelations in recent days from our colleagues from World and chained duck overwhelm the action of French relief on November 24, 2021 when 27 migrants, candidates for crossing the Channel to the British coast, died. So much so that the Secretary of State for the Sea, Hervé Berville, said he was open to sanctions if the facts were proven.

According to information gathered by Europe 1, one of the operators, second master in the National Navy, 21 years old today, has been in the sights of the intelligence services for several years under radical Islam. Her consideration by the services dates back to 2015, when she was a very young teenager. Reported to the internal security services, it was at that time the subject of monitoring by the central territorial intelligence service (SCRT) of the North for its proximity to Islamism.

Intelligence Directorate Investigations

For several months, she will be monitored by these police officers who register her in the report processing file for the prevention of terrorist radicalization (FSPRT). Her file will be closed in April 2019, “the conversion of the relevant minor today more of the adolescent fantasy”, according to the terms used at the time justifying the closing of her file. However, his name remains in the file for 5 years, as provided by law for all individuals who have been radicalized but whose situation no longer requires follow-up.

It was under these conditions that she joined the French Navy. During his recruitment, the Directorate of Intelligence and Defense Security (DRSD) obviously looks into his case, with regard to his past. At the end of two surveys disseminated, one on his arrival at school, the other on leaving, the internal intelligence service of the armed forces issued a restrictive notice for his clearance to national defense secrecy with regard to his registration, always effective even if his file is closed, at the FSPRT. On the other hand, the service considers that no obstacle stands in the way of its recruitment.

During her training, at the Maistrance school from February to July 2020 in Brest, she specialized in being a semaphoric watcher. She was then assigned in December 2020 to the Cross Gris-Nez, under the ministry responsible for the sea, but is no longer managed directly by the armies.

Should she be recruited?

Technically, the intelligence follow-up was done correctly. However, there is the question of recruitment by the French Navy even though the internal intelligence services were aware of its past. Since she has been with us, her behavior has been excellent, her superiors have noticed that she is voluntary. We can estimate that she has been put back on track”, assures a military source who concedes a “form of immaturity” in her personality.

From 2018, the French Navy had to accelerate its recruitment volumes to meet operational needs. Between 2016 and 2022, it increased from 2,600 to 4,000 recruitments per year. But the conditions of the profession and the low compensatory effort did not make it possible to retain the young recruits. “This has led to a drop in the quality of recruitment, which is quite worrying,” says another military source.
