Index – Abroad – The extradition of the drug lord captured in Budapest may be delayed
One of the reasons for the delay is that some of the extradition documents that should have arrived from Brazil are still missing. The other reason is that in the meantime the United States has also indicated that they demand the man’s extradition.
The man is suspected of money laundering by the American authorities, but during his extradition custody, the investigators of the US anti-narcotics agency, the DEA, will also see him, writes the HVG.
Due to accusations of money laundering, the United States also requested the extradition of Sergio Roberto de Carvalho, who was arrested in Budapest in July, it was revealed at the extradition hearing in Budapest. During the extradition, it was discussed whether the drug lord, who had been hiding under an alias for years, would be extradited to Brazil.
At the end of the hearing on the extradition procedure, the court only decides whether the man can be extradited at all. If the answer to the question is yes, then Judit Varga will decide whether the man will be extradited or not, and also, because of the Minister of Justice, whether to Brazil or the United States.
At the hearing on Friday, it will be revealed that Belgium has also issued an arrest warrant against him, but would only apply for his extradition if neither Brazil nor the United States could obtain it.
To the judge’s question, Carvalho replied that he would only accept the Brazilian extradition request in one case: if he were to be sent to a military prison.
