According to Budapest, the car-free Chain Bridge works perfectly
According to mayor Gergely Karácsony, “the more than 12,000 people who travel on the Lánchíd buses every day have to spend a total of less than 368 hours traveling in one day.” As an example, he mentioned that the journey from Krisztina tér to József palatán tér took an average of more than 8 minutes before the start of the renovation, and today the same route is three minutes faster, in just over 5 minutes.
According to the mayor, traffic has become not only faster, but also more predictable. “In the past, the buses were often stuck in traffic jams on the bridge and its surroundings, and this happened to everyone, regardless of whether they were sitting in a car or a bus,” he said.
The traffic on the Chain Bridge is constantly examined by the Budapest Traffic Center so that the people of Budapest can form a well-founded opinion on the final traffic order of the bridge. The Chain Bridge was put into temporary traffic on December 16, 2022, and can be used by BKK trains, taxis, and those traveling on bicycles, motorcycles, and mopeds.
The final traffic order of the bridge will be decided in the summer.
