Antwerp police arrest 25-year-old man after attempted robbery on Van Bommel football
The Antwerp police have arrested a 25-year-old man from Kapellen in Flanders for an attempted robbery. A tracker found under the Porsche of the Royal Antwerp trainer has led the police to the suspect.
In the night of 24 to 25 October 2022, 45-year-old Van Bommel escaped a robbery in the parking garage near his apartment in Antwerp. He was met by a man carrying a firearm and a flashlight was pointed at him.
In a reflex the Antwerp trainer drove backwards. He bumped into a parked car, then the alarm went off. He fled and disappeared without a trace. According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM) of Belgium, Van Bommel also started to sound for help.
Van Bommel’s car has been seized for investigation. “A tracker was found under the car”, OM spokesman Kristof Aerts. The tracker the Antwerp police to the suspect.
The 25-year-old man also emerged as a suspect through camera images of the area. “He was arrested on Thursday afternoon,” says Aerts. “The man denied in his first procedures have been developed.” The suspect will appear in court next week.
After a strong start to the season, Van Bommel is in a lesser phase with Antwerp. The former PSV coach escaped a cup injury with his team on Thursday evening by winning after penalties against SK Beveren, which plays at the second level.
