It is a mistake to make theories before all the facts are gathered
130 years ago, the legendary detective with the sharp and infallible logical judgment of Sherlock Holmes began solving his first detective stories.
It was introduced in life by the British, Scottish-born writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle doctor by original profession. In addition to detective stories, the work of this very prolific author also includes historical and fantastic short stories and novels, dramas, poetry and non-fiction. He also worked as a war correspondent and was also active in politics. the strait. He was also involved in sports; he was one of the first motorists in Great Britain and promoted the beginning of skiing. At the end of his life he became a spiritualist.
The first Sherlock Holmes stories were published by Arthur Conan Doyle under the title The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes on October 31, 1892
The stories of this private detective take place in the period from the second half of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. The entire Holmes work includes 4 novels and 56 short stories, which were published between 1887 and 1927. The characters from the novels later came to life many more times on television by other authors on paper, on the screen, on the radio, and on computer monitors.
The first time the character Sherlock Holmes appeared in the book A Study in Scarlet in 1887, then gained popularity in connection with the first series of short stories published in The Strand Magazine, beginning with “A Scandal in Bohemia” in 1891. Except for one all stories are set in the Victorian or Edwardian era, roughly between 1880 and 1914. Most are narrated by Holmes’s friend and biographer Dr. John H. Watson, who accompanies Holmes in the vast majority of his investigations and often shares with him a flat at 221B Baker Street in Westminster, London, sublet from Mrs. Hudson. Today, a Sherlock Holmes museum has been established here.
Who is Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes he has a brother who is seven years older mycroft, who is a government official. He describes his brother Sherlock as the more intelligent of the two, but notes that Mycroft has no interest in physical investigations and prefers to spend time at the Diogenes Club. To look upon one’s ancestors as “country squires.” He has never been married and is known for his reserved attitude towards women with one exception – the singer Irena Adlerová, who appeared in the story Skandál v Čechá. His greatest hobby is smoking a pipe and playing house. His other distinctive attributes are a magnifying glass, a checkered cap, and chemical experiments. His strengths include keen observation, deduction, knowledge of forensic science, and logical reasoning bordering on fantasy, which he uses to investigate cases for a variety of clients, including Scotland Yard.
Conan Doyle himself stated that his inspiration for the character of Sherlock Holmes Holmes was the real-life character of Joseph Bell, a surgeon at the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh, whom Conan Doyle proposed to in 1877 and worked for as a clerk. Like Holmes, Bell was known for drawing large conclusions from small observations. The personality of Sir Henry Littlejohn, head of the Department of Medical Jurisprudence at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Edinburgh, is sometimes cited as Holmes’s inspiration. The latter was a police surgeon and medical officer in Edinburgh and provided Doyle with a link between medical investigations and crime detection.
In addition to sharp deduction, Holmes also fights with real weapons
To confront criminals, Holmes and Watson often carry pistols with them. In Watson’s case, it’s his old service weapon (probably an Adams Mark III revolver, issued to British soldiers in the 1870s). Holmes and Watson shoot the titular dog in the novel “The Hound of the Baskervilles” and “The Adventures of the Empty House”. Watson pistol-whips Colonel Sebastian Moran, and in “The Problem of Thor’s Bridge”, Holmes uses Watson’s revolver to solve the case through an experiment.
As a gentleman, Holmes often carries a cane or cane. Watson describes him as an expert in singlestick (a martial art that uses a wooden stick). In the book “A Study in Scarlet”, Watson describes Holmes as an expert swordsman, and in the book “Gloria Scott”, the detective himself says that he trained in fencing at university. In several stories (“A Case of Identity”, “The League of Redheads”, “The Adventures of Six Napoleons”), Holmes uses a riding whip, which is described as his “favourite weapon” in the latter story.
In some stories, Holmes is also described as having above-average physical strength. In the short story “Yellow Face,” Holmes’ chronicler says, “Few men were capable of greater muscular exertion.” In the short story “The Adventures of the Spotted Band,” Dr. Roylott demonstrates his strength by cutting a fire rake in half. Watson describes Holmes’ laughter: “If he had stayed , I could show him that my grip was not much weaker than his own.” He then adds that as he spoke the detective picked up the steel rake and with a sudden effort straightened it again.
The Sherlock Holmes Museum
In 1951, as part of an exhibition about Sherlock Holmes, Holmes’ living room was reconstructed with a collection of original materials. After the exhibition, the items were taken to The Sherlock Holmes pub in London and to the Conan Doyle collection located in Lucens, Switzerland, which was created by the author’s son Adrian.
In 1969, the Toronto Reference Library began collecting materials related to Conan Doyle. Today, this extensive collection is housed in room 221B and is open to the public. Similarly, in 1974, the University of Minnesota established a collection that is now “the world’s largest collection of material relating to Sherlock Holmes and his creator”.
In 1990, the Sherlock Holmes Museum was opened on Baker Street in London, followed the next year by a museum in Meringen (near the Reichenbach Falls) dedicated to this detective, and Conan Doyle’s private collection is a permanent exhibit in Portsmouth City Museum, where its author Arthur Conan Doyle lived and worked as a doctor.
Glory Sherlock Holmes has crossed the book pages
Although Sherlock Holmes was not the first fictional detective, he is probably the most famous. As early as the 1990s, there were more than 25,000 stage adaptations, films, television productions and publications featuring the detective, and the Guinness Book of World Records lists him as the most portrayed literary human character in the history of film and television. Such is Holmes’ popularity and notoriety that many have come to believe that he is not a fictional character, but he is not a person; on the basis of this pretext, numerous literary and fan clubs were founded. Avid readers of the Holmes stories helped create the modern practice of fandom. His character and stories have had a profound and lasting influence on detective fiction and popular culture as a whole, the original stories as well as thousands of stories written by authors other than Conan Doyle have been adapted into stage and radio plays, television, film, video and other media for over a century .
