Deceased resident only found after weeks in a home in Amsterdam: “You don’t wish this on anyone”
A body was found this weekend in a house on Van Spilbergenstraat in De Baarsjes in Amsterdam. It is most likely the resident, who has been there for about six weeks.
Neighbors rang the bell. One of the residents says he got the latest from maggots in his bathroom and that another neighbor also had maggots in his home. “Then we thought, where could it come from? And we all saw the rest of the neighbors, but not him.”
Knocking at the house did not work and the neighbors were unable to reach the man in any other way. The neighbor says he called the Rochdale housing association, but she didn’t do anything. Later, the neighbors reported the man to the police, who found the man. Neighbors say the man last had contact with anyone in early September.
“He was a very nice man, a very generous man too. There were never any problems”
The neighbor also feels strange himself. “I didn’t have very good contact, it was, ‘Hi how are you?’, but it was. It wasn’t that I didn’t see him for two days and even walked up to him. He was a very nice man, a very generous man too. There were never any problems. He was always sweet. You don’t wish that on anyone that you end up like this.”
Police say investigations have shown that the man did not die as a result of a crime. It is just not possible to say with a hundred percent certainty that it really concerns the resident. The identity still has to be used through a DNA test and that will take at least another two weeks.
“It’s a terrible, unfortunately it happens in a big city”
A spokesperson for housing association Rochdale says he has no beginning to think it was someone else. The man was not known as a nuisance and paid his rent neatly. “It’s a terrible, unfortunately it happens in a big city,” says the said. He could not say yesterday whether Rochdale indeed received a report from residents.
The resident’s home, two neighbors’ homes and the stairwell are still being cleaned. For example, in one of the houses it has to be removed and in another house it was made in the ceiling. The neighbors are in a hotel and stay there for a few more days. “Rochdale has handled that well. They pay the hotel including breakfast and the travel costs,” says the neighbor.
“I’ve lived here for seventeen years, in that time we have a flat tire”
He hopes to be able to attend the funeral of the man, who is between 50 and 60 years old. He watched me grow up as a boy. He watched me grow up as a boy. want a flower for him and want to say something.”
