The new exhibition shows Prague as a city in the time of Charles IV. | PRAGUE | News
When Charles IV. returning to Bohemia in October 1333, he found Prague in decay. Prague Castle was demolished, royal castles sold and the crown blackmailed. And so the then seventeen-year-old Kralevic got to work. During the 45 years of his rule, Prague became a center of education, a center of crafts and domestic and foreign life. Medieval Prague was then ranked among the most important European cities. The Prague Karl IV exhibition shows exactly how it was transformed at that time.
“It basically represents to everyone, whether connoisseurs of Prague or tourists, the most important thing that we can and want to share about the founding of the New Town of Prague and the importance in which Prague rose during the reign of Charles IV,” said Markéta Gausová Cernerová – museum director pedagogue.
In the first part of the exhibition, the visitor gets to know the spiritual dimension of medieval Prague. Charles IV. namely, together with the Prague archbishop, he ensured that Prague became the center for the celebration of important church holidays.
“Crowds of not only Czech, but essentially European Christian pilgrims began to flow to Prague, and Prague really always became such a spiritual center of Christian Europe for a short period of the year,” said Markéta Gausová Cernerová – museum educator.
The exhibition shows how the medieval metropolis looked, for example through 3D models of houses that can no longer be found in Prague. An interesting part of the exhibition is the so-called video mapping, which visually introduces the visitor to the changes and development of medieval Prague.
“I am the least educated viewer who gets an idea of how Prague grew
But the creators of the exhibition did not forget to bring the inhabitants of Prague closer. And not only the important ones, which included, for example, craftsmen and merchants and who also had considerable political influence. The exhibition also tries to tell the stories of ordinary people, through which the visitor can get a glimpse into the society of that time.
Exhibition Prague Charles IV. people can visit in the house U Zlatého prsten near the Old Town Square in Prague. The museum is open every day except Monday, from 9 am to 6 pm.
