Aristocratic Prague II: Thune on the Lesser Side – Prague 1
I will introduce you to the walk noble family of Thun, which fundamentally influenced Czech history for several centuries. Originally from South Tyrol, the family linked its fate with the Czech lands in the 17th century. Thanks to the emperor’s support, the family’s possessions continued to expand, and with it the family’s position in the kingdom and empire grew. On the peak of power in the Czech lands the Thuns reached in the 19th century, when several representatives of the family even became top representatives of regional politics.
The walk will start at the palace in Hradčany, which today serves the needs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. We will not leave the world of diplomacy right away, as our next steps will lead to the embassies of two European powers. You knew the Thuns had only a few first names are popular and therefore is it not easy to find your way between the individual members of the family? The walk will end at the picturesque Malostranské cemetery. The guide will tell you why it is located in Smíchov and who from the Thun family is buried here.
