30 million euros: Frankfurt digs deep into its pockets for the 2024 European Football Championship hessenschau.de
Five games of the 2024 European Football Championship will be played in Frankfurt, and there will also be a fan festival. This is costing the city a lot: the city council has approved expenditure of 30 million euros.
Together with nine other German cities, Frankfurt is the venue for the 2024 European Football Championship. Five games are to be shown in the World Cup stadium in the city forest, and the city is also planning a fan mile on the banks of the Main with public viewing and other attractions.
Frankfurt will invest around 30.2 million euros in this. On Thursday evening, the city council approved the expenditure. The expected costs went up significantly. Six years ago, the figure was still 17 million euros.
Stadium needs upgrading
Sports department head Mike Josef (SPD) explained that the costs had been underestimated in the 2016 application. Around half of the money, 16 million euros, is to be spent on modernizing the stadium, which opened in 2005, on security and mobility.
According to the specifications of Uefa, the European football association, there must be more places in the stadium for reporters and wheelchair users. Additional turnstiles will also be set up at the entrance.
A month-long fan fest
The other half of the foreseeable expenditure, 14 million euros, is estimated for the fan mile between Friedensbrücke and Eiserner Steg. It should be open daily throughout the European Championship from June 14th to July 14th.
Uefa has agreed to pay for the best screens for the public viewing there if the city of Frankfurt proves in return by October that it is investing in Euro 2024, reported sports director Josef. In order to be able to meet this deadline, the application was placed on the agenda of the city council meeting on Thursday evening at short notice.
