Budapest – They called for a solution to the shortage of teachers, the introduction of a teachable and learnable amount of teaching material and a livable school.
Students, teachers, left-wing politicians, opposition activists and civilians demonstrated in Budapest on Friday for the development of education and the respect of teachers.
The organizers of the demonstration registered by the Facebook group “Students for Teachers” demanded more government attention to public education.
They called for a solution to the shortage of teachers, the introduction of a teachable and learnable amount of teaching material and a “livable school”.

The protesters marched to Fővám tér on the route Zrínyi utca – Széchenyi István tér – Dorottya utca – Vörösmarty tér – Váci utca. Meanwhile, they chanted the rhymes “free country, free education”, “no teachers, no future”, “no money, no teaching”, “pay our teachers!” and “the basic right to strike”. Among the marchers could be seen the activist Bálin Szabó, several left-wing politicians, for example Gergely Karácsony, Péter Márki-Zay, Ildiko Lendvai, Bence Tordai, Ágnes Kunhalmi. The Democratic Union of Teachers broadcast the event live on its social media page.

Speaking on the stage set up in Fővám tér, teachers and students demanded the use of more state funds for public education, called teachers to go on strike and asked for the solidarity of society for the development of education.
Many protesters wore checkered shirts, which have become a symbol of teacher movements, and waved a checkered shirt flag. At the end of the demonstration, the organizers hung an 8×4 meter checkered shirt flag on the Freedom Bridge.
