“After almost sixty years of operation, the polyclinic area is no longer sufficient for the current demands on medical facilities. I am therefore glad that we have found a way to reconstruct it, practically without operational restrictions,” said the mayor of Prague 6 Ondřej Kolář (TOP 09).
The Břevnov polyclinic will be renovated in stages. First, a new part of the polyclinic will be built on the site of the current low-rise building, into which the necessary medical services, which are now housed in the main building, will move. Subsequently, the high-rise building will be reconstructed. Some health services will be moved back from the ports after the main building is repaired, and will be supplemented by laboratories, rehabilitation and other facilities.
In a town hall poll, the citizens of Prague 6 voted for rehabilitation and physiotherapy services or a day care center for seniors and people with disabilities to be established in the polyclinic building.
The town hall wants to tentatively start building the new part of the polyclinic in 2025. According to the information in the architectural competition, the reconstruction of the high-rise building should start roughly two years later.
The jury of the two-phase architectural and urban planning competition, which Prague 6 announced in September 2021, was impressed by the proposal from the studio ov architects with its comprehensive concept. According to them, the latter responds sensitively to the architectural qualities of the original building, the author of which is the architect Richard Podzemný, but takes into account the environmental aspect and offers clear interior spaces.
Surgery and waiting rooms will be arranged according to needs. The participants of the competition had the task of proposing both the layout of the polyclinic during the reconstruction period and the final layout of the polyclinic in their proposals.
The polyclinic opened in Břevnov under the name Poliklinika Břevnov in 1963, when it was supposed to serve up to 45,000 residents in the given catchment area. Prague 6 has managed this medical facility since 2006.
