The summer holidays haven’t even started yet, but the luggage is already piling up at Zurich Airport. On Wednesday and Thursday, the countless suitcases at the baggage claim (baggage claim) immediately catch the eye. “There are a number of suitcases in the baggage claim area that are temporarily stored, they are neatly stacked, recorded in the system and processed,” said Swissport spokeswoman Nathalie Berchtold on request.
Also no suitcase chaos? Swissport employees have announced to Blick in recent weeks that they fear a horror summer. One is too little personal and not ready for the rush of guests in the months of July and August. Swissport doesn’t want to know anything about it. “Swissport currently has enough staff in Switzerland to cover regular air traffic,” says spokeswoman Nathalie Berchtold.
Swissport employees work at night
The fact that suitcases are currently being stored at Zurich Airport has nothing to do with the fact that the company’s own staff is overworked. “At the moment, aviation is seeing an increasing number of flight cancellations and staff shortages at foreign airports. That’s why more and more passengers are currently arriving in Zurich without luggage, and their luggage is only being forwarded to Zurich later from abroad,” explains Berchtold. At Zurich Airport, the baggage is then processed for delivery by courier to the passengers through clearance.
There are currently over 750 suitcases stacked up. “The pieces of luggage often reach us later than planned, which means that baggage processing accumulates with another arrival and can cause delays,” says Berchtold.
Apparently the moment is the case. Because Swissport also processes the backlog of suitcases at a late hour. “We’re currently hiring additional staff to work on extraordinary shifts to deal with backlogged luggage, even at night,” says Berchtold.
