Antwerp sends more enforcers on the road in the fight against litter (Antwerp)
The city of Antwerp supplements the number of municipal supervisors on litter with enforcers from the Flemish waste company OVAM. In addition, the city supervisors also have the approval to give people a municipal municipal (GAS) fine in their spare time.
Litter and fly tipping remain a problem in Antwerp. It is difficult to catch people in the act when it comes to enforcement. The city of Antwerp has GAS officials who carry out civilian checks. They provide OVAM. Local authorities can turn to the waste company for actions concerning the enforcement of litter, not illegal dumping. OVAM previously made thirty enforcers available. They are also on weekends and ‘s availability. Attempts are made to catch offenders in the act through patrols. Geel and Mechelen also appeal to the OVAM enforcers.
“The city of Antwerp calls on part of the entire OVAM team,” says Els van Doesburg (N-VA), alderman for City and Neighborhood Maintenance. “We mainly deploy OVAM’s litter enforcement officers in areas with a lot of litter.”
Another decision to change the chance of being caught allows GAS authorities to also issue a GAS fine in their spare time.
