Toulouse. Exhibition “Joséphine Baker, a life of commitments” at the Departmental Museum of Resistance & Deportation
From June 25 to October 29, 2022, the Departmental Museum of the Resistance & Deportation of Toulouse presents the exhibition “Josephine Baker, a life of commitments”.
This unique temporary exhibition is built around 3 themes on Josephine Baker’s freedom as an artist, her struggles and her legacy. It highlights his existence in the light of his commitment during the Second World War and evokes his love and his commitment to France, alongside those who fought against racism and anti-Semitism in the world.
The exhibition also questions the many faces of Joséphine Baker, while paying homage to discreet or well-known personalities who, paradoxically, remain forgotten faces of the Resistance.
“Joséphine Baker, a life of commitments” includes rare pieces from prestigious museum collections (Centre Pompidou Paris, MUCEM Marseille, Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris, New National Museum of Monaco, Army Museum in Paris, Cinémathèque de Toulouse, Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Nice, Paul Valery University in Montpellier, Museum of the Thirties in Boulogne-Billancourt, etc.) as well as private collections (Bouillon-Baker family, Le Corbusier Foundation, Laurent Teboul, Stéphane Nivet…), many of which have never been presented to the public: stage dresses, wigs, uniforms, lithographs, vinyl records, newspapers, as well as around fifty photos of the artist.
This exhibition was produced with Stéphane Nivet, historical advisor for the exhibition and the catalogue, with the support of the Maison de l’Afrique in Toulouse, Laurent Teboul, the LICRA and the Hassim family.
“The Departmental Council of Haute-Garonne is proud to pay tribute to Joséphine Baker, a free woman and committed artist whose luminous trajectory in the 20th century appears exemplary today”, underlines Georges Méric, President of the Departmental Council of Haute-Garonne. .
