From pulling to throwing: boycotters in Debrecen will also compete in Hortobágy
Hortobágy – On the occasion of the National Goulash Competition and Shepherd’s Meeting, on June 4, interesting goulash from different parts of the country will gather again in the Pusztai Zoo.
The adult and boyar goulash pairs taking part in the competition will showcase their professional knowledge and the skills of their craft in competitions related to their daily work. The organizers of the event, Hortobágyi Nonprofit Kft.
The goulashes will be able to prove their craftsmanship in front of the audience by competing with each other on June 3 and then on the 4th of each event. In addition to the goulash, the boycars representing the youth are also regular and enthusiastic participants of the competition, who have been outstandingly from two vocational high schools for many years: the László Baross Agricultural and Secondary School in Mátészalka and the János Balásházy Secondary School of the University of Debrecen.
The main competitions – which are related to the daily work of the shepherds – are the water draw from the boom well, the location of which is the renovated boom well of the Pusztai Zoo, the animal count, during which the animals crossing the bridge must be estimated as accurately as possible.
The most difficult, but at the same time the most exciting and skill-reflecting race, the animal catch-ear read, the use of a ring whip, the goulash-stick throw, the pitch-toss, and the ear-tattoo.
The accompanying event of the goulash competition is the folk art fair, which guarantees a selection of original folk products related to pastoralism. Of course, gastronomy cannot be left out of the line either, in addition to the offer of the Hortobágyi Csárda, shepherds will present their cooking skills during the cooking demonstration of the traditional shepherd’s dish, during which
the prepared dishes can be tasted during the day.
The venue of the goulash competition has been hosting the National Shepherd Dance Competition organized by the Hajdú Dance Ensemble for many years. The aim of the organizers is to preserve, promote and stimulate one of the most archaic areas of our dance tradition, the world of shepherd dances.
