Prague has gained its mark in space. The first training satellite goes into orbit Education News Pražská Drbna
This week, the eleventh Czech or Czechoslovak artificial satellite of the planet Earth went into space. It was brought into orbit by the Falcon 9 rocket, which launched its journey from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The satellite is to serve the purposes of Czech schoolchildren for education.
The flight control center is in the Prague Planetarium
The satellite called Planetum-1 comes from the workshop of the Planetum platform. This Prague contributory organization unites the Prague Observatories and the Planetarium. There is also a flight control center.
“Tonight Prague will get its mark in space! Our contributory organization Planetum, which, in cooperation with the Czech startup Spacemanic and the Research and Testing Aviation Institute, worked for months on the development of a special satellite Planetum-1, will take care of that. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that our satellite with SpaceX Elona Muska will be in orbit in order and that it will be able to serve not only Praguers for contact with space, “ said before the start in a press release Hana Třeštíková (Prague to Herself), Councilor for Culture and Tourism, who has the Planetum in his responsibility.
It will serve students and university students
The satellite is unique because it is the first purely educational satellite in the world. It is intended to serve primary and secondary schools so that first-hand pupils can discover the universe. Workshops are then prepared for them directly in the planetarium, where they will learn more about the satellite’s journey, how it takes a photo or how it passes it back to Earth. Planetum-1 also has a built-in range of sensors that will serve university students as a source of data for bachelor’s or master’s theses.

“The first Czech puppet car, Hurvínek, is traveling on board, who will share experience with the preparation and the space flight itself with smaller and larger children. This activity is created in cooperation with the Spejbl and Hurvínek Theater, “ the spokesman of the municipality specified in the press release Vít Hofman.
The cost of the project is approximately three and a half million crowns. The Czech startup Spacemanic and the Aeronautical Research and Testing Institute will also appear on the satellite. Thanks to this, the Planetum-1 has an active orientation system that allows very precise maneuvering. It is the best space-oriented satellite of this size in the world.
