The southern border of the country

To the south, Bulgaria borders Turkey and Greece. Our southern border with Turkey (259 km) starts at the mouth of the Rezovska River, crosses Strandzha, the Derventa Hills, the Tundzha River and the Sakar Mountain. He graduated from the village of Kapitan Andreevo. There is a border checkpoint near Malko Tarnovo, Lesovo and Kapitan Andreevo, a duty free zone – in Svilengrad.

The border with Greece (493 km) starts from the village of Kapitan Andrevo, crosses the Western and Eastern Rhodopes and the Mesta River, continues along the ridge of Slavyanka Mountain and Struma River and reaches Tumba Peak in Belasitsa. There are border checkpoints near Ilinden, Zlatograd, Makaz, Ivaylovgrad, Captain Petko Voyvoda, Ivaylovgrad, and Kulata.

Gyumyurjin snowfield

Gyumyurjinski Snezhnik is a mountain hill in the southern part of the Eastern Rhodopes. It spreads on the territory of Bulgaria (Kardzhali district) and Northern Greece. The width of the ridge reaches 15 km. Its northern slopes, located on Bulgarian territory, are more sloping and longer and descend to the upper reaches of the river Varbitsa.

The southern slopes, located on the territory of Greece, rise like a wall above the Gyumri lowland. To the southwest (Greek territory) the valley of the river Sushitsa separates it from the mountain Momchil (part of the Western Rhodopes). To the west through the saddle Three Stones are connected with another hill Yellow Parts, and to the east through the saddle Makaza it is connected with the hill Maglenik.

Gyumyurjinski Snezhnik is the largest protected area in the Eastern Rhodopes. Here you can see a bald eagle, a black woodpecker, a brown bear. There are 11 species of plants and 5 species of animals included in the Red Book of Bulgaria. The prices are especially the forests of the Balkan endemic mountain maple, as well as the Rhodope cream located on the Balkan endemic – the only one in the Eastern Rhodopes and one of the few in the country.

There are 23 villages on the northern slopes in Bulgaria, and 6 villages on Greek territory.

Peak Veikata

Veikata Peak is 1463 m high and is the highest peak of the Gyumyurjinski Snezhnik hill in the Eastern Rhodopes. It is located on the territory of Bulgaria and is the southernmost point of the page. Here is the 4th border pyramid. Many locals call him Karluk. In the same hill is the highest peak in the Eastern Rhodopes – Orlitsa (1510 m), located in Greece.

The view from Veikata peak is incredibly beautiful. In clear weather, you can see a large part of neighboring Greece, the White Sea, Portologos and others. There are several starting points to the top. One of them is through the village of Chakalarovo. At the end of the village there is a road, from where in about an hour and a half you reach the former border post. From here on the road along the border furrow for another 2 hours you reach the top. Another starting point is the village of Gorno Kapinovo.

Gorno Kapinovo – the southernmost town in Bulgaria

Gorno Kapinovo is located in Kirkovo municipality, Kardzhali district, 26 km from Makaza border checkpoint.
It is located at the foot of Veikata Peak, on the left bank of the river Kazalach, which springs 3 km above the village of Karadjova Padina on the border with Greece. The village is known as the southernmost settlement in the country and as a starting point for the area Gyumyurjinski Snezhnik, as well as for hiking to the peak Veikata.
According to data from 2022, 257 people live in the population.
