Jessica Pegula only needed one match point to secure that win at Roland Garros.
The 11th seed American will make her debut in the fourth round of the French Open, after she eliminated the 2021 semifinalist Tamara Zidanšek from Slovenia 6-1, 7-6 (2) on Saturday.
The end was much simpler than Pegula’s first two wins, in which she claimed a total of 18 points to break through: 10 in the first round, eight in the second.
Pegula, who competes with Irina-Camelia Begu for a place in the quarterfinals, is one of only two of the top 15 winners left in the women’s draw. No. 1 Iga Swiatek is second.

Badosa was 29-3 behind Veronika Kudermetova 6-3, 2-1 due to health problems, and Sabalenka lost to Camila Giorga 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

First-place finisher Iga Swiatek won her 31st straight game and finished fourth in four appearances in the fourth round of Roland Garros with a sometimes unstable 6-3, 7-5 win over Danko Kovinic.
Swiatek, the champion of the French Open 2020, has now collected 48 of the last 49 sets she has played. Her winning streak is the longest in women’s tennis since Serena Williams won 34 in a row in 2013.
Swiatek improved its career record in the clay slam grand slam tournament to 17-2, a winning percentage of 0.895.
This was not completely smooth for Swiatek against 95. Kovinič.
Swiatek’s forehand was a particularly difficult spot: this punch was responsible for 17 of her 23 unforced errors.
The 20-year-old Pole lost four straight games in the second set, trailing 5-4, then recovered and demanded that the last three finish the win in 90 minutes.
Kovinič played in the third round of the grand slam tournament for the second time. The second was in January at the Australian Open when she lost to eventual champion Ash Barty.
Barty retired in March and was replaced by Swiatek at No. 1 in the WTA rankings.
