Cash from the National Bank leaves Brussels
The National Bank of Belgium is working on a new cash center. The building will be in Zellik: the day before yesterday the first symbolic stone was laid. The activities of the NBB are moving to the center of Brussels on the outskirts of our capital. The new building should be inaugurated by the end of 2024.
The current cash center of the National Bank, where banknotes and coins are put into or removed from circulation, is located in the main building in the Berlaimontlaan and is outdated. An investment in new, more infrastructure was necessary. The treatment, control and it would result in the future run more smoothly.
In the search for a new location, people quickly looked to the Brussels suburbs, instead of the center of the capital. That is not always easily accessible even for money couriers. After a long search, they came across a large warehouse complex on a site of more than three hectares in Zellik. The building itself would be no less than 27 meters high.
Staff savings
A total of 80 employees will start working in Zellik. At present, 119 employees are still responsible for the National Bank’s cash activities in the center of Brussels. The automation thus comes with a personnel saving. The center is scheduled to be ready in the spring of 2024. Following the move of all banknotes and coins.
Finally, there are also plans for the future for the head office in Brussels, director Tim Hermans explains. “Once the cash center in Zellik can be ready to start developing our headquarters climate in Brussels, which we urgently need to make more friendly and adapt to the new working culture that the Bank is pursuing.”
