They have grown up around criminals, but these boys did not follow in the brothers’ footsteps
Stories of violence, stone-throwing and threats spread in Nørrebro.
Police discovered that the boys behind it were only between 7 and 12 years old and lived much of their lives in the street.
This is how the Danes stop the very youngest from becoming gang criminals.
COPENHAGEN (Aftenposten): Oslo has almost twice as many young criminals as Copenhagen, which uses new methods: These 12 young boys have been followed up around the clock to prevent them from becoming criminals.
– I hope you fall, shouts one of the boys to social worker Mathilde Støvring.
– When I hope you will receive me, she answers.
The noise level is high inside the municipal initiative Gadepulsen in Nørrebro, just outside Copenhagen city center. For five years, they have worked with 12 boys who they feared would start with crime.
For years, politicians and police in Oslo have been trying to achieve the same. It is especially worrying for young boys who commit a lot of crime early on. The fear is that they will slip into criminal circles and gangs. Some are draining communities of enormous resources.
In Denmark, however, the number of gang criminals has plummeted. Both the number of young people who have been reported and convicted have decreased in Copenhagen. In the district of Nørrebro, drastic action was taken when a group of young boys committed violence, vandalism and caused unrest in the streets.
