Music – Frankfurt am Main – Oper Frankfurt work next season – Culture
Frankfurt/Main (dpa) – After two and a half seasons with a limited offer due to the corona pandemic, the Frankfurt Opera will largely return to normal operations from autumn. In the 2022/23 season, the opera will have eleven premieres, including some that have been postponed due to Corona. It is the last season with General Music Director Sebastian Weigle and the 20th with Artistic Director Bernd Loebe.
During the Corona period, when operas were sometimes only allowed to play in front of 250 guests, the house lost 5,000 of around 12,000 subscribers, as Loebe reported at the schedule press conference on Tuesday. In order to win them back, the prices for subscriptions will not be increased – single tickets will be five percent more expensive from the next season.
One million euros have already been saved for a total of 400 events in the next season. For the next three years, a “sword of Damocles” will hover over the opera, said Loebe: the opera should save ten million euros a year for three years from 2023. One hopes for insight from politicians: “Ten million euros a year cannot be saved in any way. Then we’ll close the shop.”
The season begins on October 2nd with a new production of Mozart’s “Magic Flute”. Among others, Wagner’s “Meistersinger von Nürnberg”, Handel’s “Orlando” and Strauss’ “Elektra” follow, as well as lesser-known works such as the premiere of Vito Zuraj’s “Bloom” based on a novella by Thomas Mann.
“We can only hope that Corona does not return vehemently and that the city does not sacrifice the municipal theaters in order to reorganize its budget, the importance of which is so important for the audience, the region and the art-interested world,” Schloss Loebe.
