History of Lyon: the day Lyon became French
There was a time when Lyon was not a city in France. He waited until 1312 and the Treaty of Vienna so that the city now belonged to the Kingdom of France.
Lyon, the city of all empires
Back to 14and century. Located on the border of the Rhône, the city of Lyon is regularly sought and recovered by different kingdoms and Empire. Among them, in 534, Lyon belongs to the Frankish Kingdom. It will then belong to the Kingdom of Burgundy before joining the Holy Roman Empire in 1032. But that will not stop the wars to recover the city. The Count of Forez, which today corresponds to the Loire, and the archbishop of Lyon Héracle de Montboissier will fight for the city. By granting all powers to the archbishop in 1157Emperor Frederick 1uh Barbarossa will try to calm the discords. Or, the full power of the church pleases everyone.
The city of all desires
The bourgeoisie and the church will then, in turn, go to war in Lyon for Lyon. Since the Archbishop of Lyon, Philippe 1uh of Savoy, leaves his function to become Count of Savoy in 1267, the battles will flow. We have to wait for the coming to power of the King Philip the Fair, son of Philip III, in 1292 to begin to see a change. The bourgeoisie asking him for help to protect the city, the King takes the opportunity to recover it from the Holy Roman Empire. If Pierre de Savoie, Archbishop of Lyon at that time, tries to stir up the people, he will ultimately have no choice but to give in in 1307. Three years later, Louis, the king’s son, landed in Lyon and arrested the archbishop. And in 1312, the Treaty of Vienna was signed.
Lyon to France
What is the Treaty of Vienna? Concretely, it is a document in which Pierre de Savoie officially renounces his civil and legal rights over Lyon in favor of the king and all his successors. In exchange, he recovers other lands over which he has no sovereignty. Lyon thus enters the Kingdom of France and thus becomes a city of France on April 10, 1312. In September 2012, the city thus celebrated its 700and anniversary of belonging to France.
