Davis Cup – Goffin’s Belgium finds itself back to the wall in Espoo #DavisCup #Belgium #Goffin #Tennis #VanHerck
One of the posters to watch over the weekend of Davis Cup is the duel between Belgium and the Finland. The start of the day on Friday was eventful since Joran Vliegen has tested positive. The Belgian player was isolated and the match maintained. A blow for the double this Saturday… especially since the two teams were back to back on Friday evening. In free fall for several weeks, the Liégeois David Goffin it’s well put together, but Zizou Bergs could not achieve the feat against the Finnish n°1. A Espoo, Emil Ruusuvuori and his people are over-motivated. The pair Gilles/Goffin lost in the opening this Saturday against Ruusuvuori/Heliovaara 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5). The Liégeois is playing for the survival of his country against Ruusuvuori. The Belgians are in a bad position…
David Goffin after losing entry to Melbourne
Goffin hasn’t done a miracle in doubles but must do in singles
Broken down, the Liégeois returned to victory on Friday. Eliminated in the first round rotterdam, Doha then to dubai, the Belgian has dropped 380 points in total this month. With all that less, he now finds himself in 68th place in the world. His worst ranking since July 2014… The meeting of Davis Cup perhaps falls at the best of times. Victorious in singles this Friday by Otto Virtanen (7-5, 3-6, 6-1), Goffin revives. His second singles match will be against Emil Ruusuvuori winner of Zizou Bergs.. But before his second single, the Liégeois lost the double with Sander Gille. The deal is simple: Goffin must beat Ruusuvuori to keep Belgium alive.
The player is self-isolating and will remain self-isolating until cleared in accordance with established protocols.
The meeting will continue as scheduled. (2/2)— Belgian Davis Cup team (@DavisCupBelgium) March 4, 2022
Ruusuvuori wants to be the finished hero
In the second game, the logic was also respected. Opposed to Emil Ruusuvuori, Zizou Bergs could not create the feat against the 71st in the world. However, the Belgian n°2 rose to the occasion, especially at the end of the game. If the first set was played on a break in the middle of the round, in the second, the Belgian almost reversed the trend with a late break which could have made the Finn doubt. But in front of his public, Ruusuvuori did not tremble and won in two sets 6-3, 7-5. In form, he won the double with Heliovaara and will have the opportunity to give victory to his team against Goffin. If he does, he will have given the three points to his team.
