The DFDS line between Calais and Sheerness on the verge of closing
The freight transport service between Calais and Sheerness is seriously threatened. The link opened last July and is suspended since January 15. The handling of trailers or containers without a driver was canceled due to a dispute between the dockworkers and the SEPD (Straits Ports Operating Company).
A possible report on the Calais-Dover line
In the event of closure, this unaccompanied freight service could be maintained by the Calais-Dover link of DFDS. Initially, it was the employees of the SEPD who were supposed to handle the handling of trailers and containers without a driver on the Calais-Sheerness link. But the dockers claim the right to perform this service. Loadings on this line have been disrupted.
Negotiations have resumed since Thursday evening. DFDS is trying to find an economically viable way out, but if the handling had to be done by the dockers, it would represent too high a cost for the company. The decision to maintain or close should fall next week.
On a daily basis, the line provided by the Maxine ferry could accommodate approximately 165 unaccompanied cargo units.
