Amsterdam police officers now at work in Weesp: “Something is definitely happening here”
Due to the merger with Amsterdam, Weesp has received four new Amsterdam local police officers. “Something will change for the Weespers,” says local police officer Wendy Nagtegaal. “They see police driving all the time.”
For example, the businesses will be located in the Hogeweij district, a district with many high-rise buildings where it was a bit restless around the turn of the year. The new Weespersluis district, where people will be living, is also receiving attention.
“I think it’s used to the old Weespers,” says Nagtegaal about the new district. “That such an enormous amount of new people is added, who largely also come from Amsterdam. And therefore also have a different way of life sometimes.”

The officers who report 112 calls from a desk in Diemen and the local officers themselves are in an office in the fire station on Aetsveldselaan in Weesp. You can file a declaration there. In previous years, the police in the Gooi and Vechtstreek region protected Weesp, but that team had a large area and a shortage of officers.
“We are now with a little more agents. I am hopeful that the Weespers will notice that we are there”
Nagtegaal previously worked at police stations in the Baarsjes, on the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and with the Amsterdam water police. In Wees, the number of crimes in comparison with the whole of Amsterdam is high: according to the CBS in 2020 there were 740. In the whole of Amsterdam there were 71,200 at that time. Still, according to her, the work in Weesp is not boring. Agents have already encountered stolen mopeds and drivers without a driver’s license and in the summer expect crowds and parties in the center.
“Something is definitely going on in Weesp,” says the local police officer. “I am firmly convinced that much more is happening than we currently know. The colleagues from Gooi and Vechtstreek have really done their best. But they were simply limited in their resources. And we are now happy with a little more. So I’m hopeful that the Weespers will notice that we’re there.”
Weesp will officially belong to the municipality of Amsterdam from 22 March. It is called Weesp from the urban area.
