In Zurich, parking spaces in residential areas are disappearing. Now the voters are fighting back
The city of Zurich is serious about reducing parking spaces. A week ago, she published plans for all 62 existing blue zone parking spaces and 13 motorcycle parking spaces to disappear in the Unterstrasse residential area, preferably a so-called preferred bicycle route on two neighborhood streets. 16 new bicycle parking spaces are planned for this purpose.
Objection now comes from the residents, of all people. Although they also approved the new traffic guideline plan last November, it is only now that they seem to understand what this means.
Andreas Aeschlimann, President of the Unterstrass district association, says that although the sidewalks need to be widened and the bike routes improved, “the fact that so many parking spaces are to be eliminated could prove to be problematic”. He wonders where residents could park their cars in the future and whether the neighborhood would have to adjust to additional noise from search traffic.
I am daily scoreboard he asked the question: “Are replacements being sought on private property in front gardens and backyards?”
You will know the answer sooner or later. But hardly anything can be changed. For responsible voters and taxpayers, the following applies: “As you make your bed, so you lie down.”
