Researchers at the University of Debrecen have developed bone and joint replacement implants
Debrecen – Implants that can be used in the body area were developed as part of a four-member collaboration. Experts say there may be an increasing need for custom implants in medicine in the future.
The models were created with 3D printing, and the researchers aimed to find the current more time- and cost-effective method for the problem of bone replacement, one that the test can easily and for a long time accept. To do this, spongy structures were made that could be incorporated into the bone of the host.
The method has been successfully tested on animals. The system, which is unique in Hungary, was developed from a budget of HUF 2 billion over four years.
Medical applications are hampered by the fact that researchers can only prepare implants, but only 4 providers in the European Union are able to manufacture them.
– We plan what kind of replacement we would make, but we can only make a prefabrication. We need an implant manufacturer who has a very strict accredited and regularly checked process control and quality assurance system, they finish all the way to the packaging, so we are referring to each other – emphasized Zoltán Csernátony, head of the department of the Faculty of General Medicine.
