Fu Cong, director of the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s arms control department, said Russia and the United States of America should cut their nuclear arsenal.
The diplomat said that Beijing welcomes the extension of START III by Russia and the United States.
“Secondly, we do not believe that even after the extension of START III, the United States and Russia together possess more than 90% of the nuclear weapons existing on Earth,” he said.
China will be happy to join the nuclear talks if Russia and the United States reduce their arsenal to its level, Fu Cong added.
Recall that UN Secretary General António Guterres welcomes the joint five-sided statement on the inadmissibility of nuclear war, as well as that the “nuclear five” intends to adhere to its obligations on non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, disarmament and arms control. This was announced by his official representative Stephane Dujarrick. According to Dujarrik, the UN Secretary General “is inspired by the intention of the nuclear states to continue to take measures to prevent nuclear war in line with his long-standing dialogue, dialogue and cooperation with this goal.”
