Antwerp and Ostend airports have had ‘a good year’
Last year 147,000 people traveled via Antwerp. Compared to the 88,000 passengers in 2020 was a big improvement, but in the airline business is still far behind. In 2019, 305,000 people still visited the airport. “Our airport was hit hard again during the first months of 2021. Due to the data corona figures and a new lockdown, non-essential travel was banned until April 19. The first TUI fly flights to five Spanish destinations only departed at the end of April. That was clearly felt in the numbers. There were 39,000 passengers in the first half of the year,” Antwerp Airport said in a statement.
The recovery will start in the summer. In July, August and September there were 61,000 passengers: much more than in the summer of 2020. The trend continued after that. Eric Dumas, the CEO of both Antwerp and Ostend airports, therefore speaks of ‘a promising result’ and is ‘optimistic’ about 2022. The business flights segment stood out at Antwerp airport in 2021; as of the summer, the number was 6 percent above that of 2019.
Ostend-Bruges Airport can boast of a strong year for cargo, with 62,000 tons of cargo transported. For the airport on the Belgian coast, ‘Strong’ means that the volume was much higher than in the years prior to the pandemic – 2019: 24,000 tons. Compared to earlier periods, even less freight is transhipped at Ostend. In the years 2005-2008, for example, the tonnage was above 100,000 tons. about the passage Ostend says it has booked ‘, with 221,000 passengers transported, a doubling compared to 2020, but still considerably lower than the 457,000 travelers in 2019.
