The strange case of the New Year’s concert in Vienna, because it is not live in Italy
A world-famous event that has been repeated every January 1st since 1959. Broadcast live also in Italy, since 2004 it has been replaced by the New Year’s concert in Venice, broadcast live on Rai1, and “downgraded” to a deferred broadcast on Rai2.
Riccardo Muti conducted the Vienna New Year concert 6 times in his career, the most recent in 2021.
The first of the year, as we know, is the day of classical music. The morning awakening of January 1st is accompanied by this atmosphere, a tradition generated by a world-famous event, the Vienna New Year’s concert. Also in 2022, as for over 60 years, the event will be repeated with the master Daniel Barenboim Committed to directing the event for the third time after 2009 and 2014 with theVienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Vienna concert, a tradition since 1959
The Vienna New Year’s concert is scheduled for January 1, at 11.30, is broadcast in 90 countries and followed by millions of viewers around the planet, but in Italy it is broadcast deferred at 1.30pm on Rai2. The reason goes back to a rather particular case of chauvinism, which translates into a curious case in the history of our TV. Broadcast live by Rai since 1959, the New Year’s concert in Vienna continues the tradition of awakening with music in Italy as well. by Strauss on the morning of January 1 and collects plays in line with the caliber and global prestige of an event that is estimated to be seen by about one billion people around the world.
From 2004 comes the New Year’s concert in Venice
In 2004 everything changes. Following the reconstruction of the Gran Teatro La Fenice after the 1996 fire, an extraordinary event is set up to celebrate the rebirth of the Venetian theater. The New Year’s concert in Venice becomes a sort of permanent Italian response to the one played by the Vienna Philharmonic, which has since been “downgraded” to airing on Rai2, no longer live but deferred. On the contrary, the La Fenice concert is broadcast live on Rai1. Also this year, Saturday 1 January 2022, starting at 12.20 the broadcast of the New Year’s Concert in Venice begins, with the orchestra e the choir of the Teatro La Fenice directed by Fabio Luisi. As well as the proverbial Radetsky’s march punctuated by the applause of the audience of the Vienna Philharmonic, the Venice concert also closes with a ritual simile, to the notes of Giuseppe Verdi with the “Va ‘Pensiero sull’ali dorate” and “Libiam ne’ lieti calici” choir. Two different concerts, with a prestigious and an incomparable history, which have also raised the controversy of fans over the years.
