Cooling off without anything: swimming in Hanover | NDR.de – Nachrichten – Lower Saxony

How did you start the new year fresh? With a cool bath. People bathed in the Sonnensee in Hanover – and the participants had left their swimwear at home.
Participants may have thought that if swimming on January 1st was going to be the right thing to do. Some warmed their ears with hats, some gloves were also visible. But nothing more. We went naked in the five degree cold lake in the north of Hanover. About a dozen women and men took part, as reported by the Association for Family Sports and Free Life (BffL) Hanover.
New year nude swim hat tradition
The club will be 75 years old this year and traditionally heralds the year with the New Year’s nude swim. With around 1,500 members, the BffL is one of the largest naturist associations in Germany.
After all: 15 degrees outside temperature
At least the air was unusually warm for New Years Day. “It’s 15 degrees outside temperature in January, that’s great,” said 65-year-old Mona Marin. “After cooling off, we are now looking forward to a warm soup and a warm drink.”
Swimming failed in many places
In many places bathing was canceled again this year due to the corona pandemic. For example, on the East Frisian Islands and in Norddeich (district of Aurich) the first refreshment of the year was waived.
