MOSCOW, December 31 – RIA Novosti. Russia is going to withdraw from 16 objects at the Baikonur cosmodrome, they will be transferred to Kazakhstan by the end of 2022, RIA Novosti source at the cosmodrome told RIA. A special commission is considering the possibility of removing it from the register of Russian enterprises before transferring it to Kazakhstan. Earlier, the general director of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin announced plans to disable unnecessary facilities at the Baikonur cosmodrome. Russia does not operate these facilities, it is pointless to be responsible for them, therefore, “whether it be metal or other materials,” they must be disposed of, Rogozin said. Changes to the lease agreement for the Baikonur cosmodrome from Kazakhstan entered into force in the summer of 2021. Now the cosmodrome is leased out until 2050, whereas earlier in the agreement signed in 1994, it was provided for a lease for 20 years. The parties agreed to extend the agreement in 2004. Baikonur is the world’s first cosmodrome, from where the first artificial Earth satellite, the first cosmonaut of the planet Yuri Gagarin, was launched. After the collapse of the USSR, it became the property of Kazakhstan. Russia pays $ 115 million annually for the lease of Baikonur.
