Moscow and Tiraspol put new diplomatic pressure on Moldova under the pretext of resuming negotiations in the “5 + 2 format”
Moscow welcomes Tiraspol’s readiness to enter into talks on ways to get closer to the banks of the Dniester and to relaunch negotiations in the “5 + 2 format”, Zaharova said on Saturday.
“We urge the leaders of the Republic of Moldova to show a constructive approach and to respond positively to the Transnistrian initiative,” she urged.
In his opinion, this initiative it can “relaunch the process of resolving the Transnistrian conflict and overcome its stagnation.”
Russia is ready to provide mediation and guarantees in the process, she said.
The services of the unrecognized Transnistrian leader Vadim Krasnoselski published a letter on Friday to his Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu in which he evokes opportunities for a comprehensive solution to the frozen conflict between the Republic of Moldova and Transnistria.
In the “5 + 2 Format” negotiations, in Berlin in 2016 and in Vienna in 2017, the two sides reached some agreements.
However, in recent years, these negotiations are at a standstill, and no meeting has been held in the last two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, has opened up the resumption of dialogue with the Russian Government on Transnistria, with a view to withdrawing Russian troops and ammunition from the region.
