Péter Erdő: the joy of Christmas brings comfort and security
Budapest – The basic need and desire of man to be loved and to be loved, he said in the cardinal’s festive Mass.
The joy of Christmas, God’s love for humanity, brings comfort to those who mourn and gives security to those who live in fear of sickness and trouble. This is what Cardinal Péter Erdő, the archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest, spoke about in Christmas.
In the crowded St. Stephen’s Basilica, the cardinal put it this way: “Christmas has made us realize what is really important in our lives, opens our hearts to one another, enables us to truly repent, and shows God’s forgiving mercy.”
Péter Erdő emphasized that a person’s basic need and desire is to be loved and loved. And God has shown that man has this quality and will take it upon himself. God “wants to give love and wants us to love him,” he said.
The chief pastor also pointed out that throughout history, love has been contrasted with law or justice. Yet the law made a decision in the Bible that gave it an authority and ultimately came from God. What is truly legitimate is in accordance with the will of God and the order of the world.
Therefore, upholding the real right pervades a person’s life, creating harmony in society, between man and the world, and between man and his environment.
He remarked, this is not, of course, a right, but a human power to invent at will, but “carefully and humbly conforming to the order of reality,” the plan of the God of creation.
The Bible often states that man must make his decisions according to God’s direction. And this guidance “comes in Jesus to His ultimate riches.” He is the one who forever consolidates righteousness and true justice, who brings peace between God, man, and the world.
Even if his earthly life ends with a cross and resurrection, “he calls us his brothers and calls us to eternal happiness,” where love and law coincide, justice and peace meet, Péter Erdő said.
The cardinal urged that this Christmas, “we are determined to seek the truth and peace of God, to be a companion of Jesus now, in our earthly lives, to abide with him forever.”
At the end of the Mass, the Chief Pastor expressed the joy of being able to celebrate together again, but with reverence, love, and hope, as at the International Eucharistic Congress in September.
He also said that every child, every new life, brings hope, and Jesus Christ gives strength, security, and love beyond hope. We “live it in our homes and pass it on to the whole world!” asked Péter Erdő.
