Members of four minority municipalities tuned together for Christmas in Debrecen – with a video
The local Polish, Bulgarian, German and Ukrainian communities gave a taste of the musical and dance traditions and festive dishes of their homeland. The Debrecen Cultural Center and the Youth House organized the “Christmas of the Nations” for the purpose of creating a tradition.
The nationalities living in Debrecen were introduced to the audience with their stage productions, but they were also made with many festive delicacies typical of their motherland. For example, there are 12 different dishes on a traditional Polish table.
“They say that everyone should eat all the food, even if they don’t like it, because it will bring good luck next year,” we learned from Tibor Rácz, president of the DMJV’s Polish Nationality Self-Government.
According to the organizers, it is also important to learn about the Advent customs of other nations. The director of the Debrecen Cultural Center and Youth House said that the participating Polish, Bulgarian, German and Ukrainian municipalities are also Christian communities, with lots of value, and they are also looking forward to Christmas.
– They get the same value that we create and love together here in Debrecen. We think that it is very important for a public cultural institution to reach out to them and that it is important for them to live their nationality, said János D. Halász.
Deputy Mayor István Puskás emphasized that
Debrecen is not usually thought of as a multi-ethnic city, although many minorities live in the city.
“It’s a very nice thing for them to be able to show their own culture as much as possible to become part of the city’s culture with their very colorful lives. Such an event offers all of us many experiences and good opportunities to learn from each other – we could hear István Puskás.
The Christmas of Nations was held for the first time in Debrecen, creating a tradition.
