Climate camp at the town hall takes a winter break
The climate activists will have waited 156 days in front of the New Town Hall in Hanover on Sunday – and it will be before the last day. Because of the colder weather and the increasing corona incidence, the activists want to take down their tents. The camp will then be rebuilt in the spring.
The camp lasted over 150 days, “150 days full of energy, full of commitment and heart and soul. Just because we are no longer standing in front of the Trammplatz does not mean that we lower our voices ”, participant Robert Hein is quoted from a message from the demonstrators. Hein said it cannot be that the camp has been standing in front of the town hall for so long and that no effective steps have been taken towards climate protection.
Originally, the activists had announced under the slogan “We stay until you acted” that they wanted to continue the protest until 2035 if necessary. Their demands included well-developed and ticketless local transport, climate-friendly food in all canteens and canteens and ten percent of the municipal budget for climate protection projects.
But recently the protest at a prominent place in the city had become more and more difficult. The activists not only have to name a demo line around the clock, but the police had also decreed that “non-sleeping people” must be present at all times. The activists had appealed to the administrative court, but failed.
Nevertheless, the camp should not disappear without a trace. “Until the camp is rebuilt, there will be an art exhibition on Trammplatz,” a statement said. “With the art exhibition we can be present without putting our health at risk,” emphasizes spokeswoman Tabea Dammann.
