Birthday chess players from Debrecen
Debrecen – Beyond the seventies, Mile Kálmánné and Fekete István are active participants in the city’s chess life.
Two well-known characters in the chess life of the Cívisváros celebrated their 75th and 74th birthdays, who were greeted by László Áts, their old chess partner and friend.

– Mile Kálmánné, “Our Relationship” with Valika started in 1981, when I met myself as a 6-year-old child in one of my first official chess competitions, a nice, always smiling aunt. According to my recollections, we played a county competition with the Alföldi Nyomda, where Valika opened my favorite Caro-Cann with my coach at the time, and I tried to achieve the best possible results on the youth field, but without success. I sighed at the defeat, Valika came over and comforted me. “Don’t cry Lacika, life is still ahead of you, you will reap many more victories,” László Áts recalled the forty previous story, saying that the motivating words of the chess lady resonated to this day.
– Valika was a respected employee of Alföldi Nyomda from 1980 until her retirement in 2006, and she is still fond of being remembered by her colleagues. He played in the chess team of Nyomda for thirty years, until 2010, when I was transferred to the Chess Friends Club in Debrecen in 2010, because the team needed a routine female competitor. He is no longer so active because of his illnesses, but if we invite him to a good chess tournament, Valika is still available for it. He plays in the DSBK seniors team of five, where all his teammates have turned seventy, for a total of 362 years in one round. In County 1 and NB teams, he no longer takes on the game, because at the age of 75, 4-5 hours of concentration is not so easy, so he prefers to go to the team’s teammates, but he doesn’t sit at a table at that time. His favorite competition is the village day trial in Nyíracsád, Derecske and Mikepércs.
László Áts met István Fekete in the late eighties.
– My acquaintance started with him around 1988, I went to the thermal bath in Debrecen as a relaxation of my chess competitions. A lovely “old uncle” (at the time I was 13 at the time, according to his 41-year-old) was there every day, arriving with a stick, limping. We got into a conversation, I found out he was trying to recover from a car accident with a truck. He showed brutal photos, to this day I don’t understand how he could get out of a little Skoda alive after such a collision. He said he loves to play chess too, but he has nowhere to go because he has no proof of association. In 1991, I invited him to a chess simult, which was held by my friend, the Hungarian chess Olympian Zoltán Almási. Then we played in a team, also in the team of the Chess Friends Club of Debrecen. He is also a member of the 5-member DSBK senior team. In 2012, he also participated in the second Almási simultaneous. Nowadays, he devotes a lot of his time to his grandchildren in the role of a grandfather. He is also active in chess to this day and can enjoy any chess victory.
