Florence, dedicated to Giorgio Morales, a square next to the Leopolda – Cronaca
Florence, 29 November 2021 – A square and soon the terminus of the tram line for the Piagge-Campi Bisenzio. From today Florence has a square dedicated to Giorgio Morales. Exactly one year after the death of the former mayor, the municipal administration has dedicated a place in the city to him, that is the area that opens on the left of via Elio Gabbuggiani, with access both from this road and from viale Fratelli Rosselli, next to it. to the Leopolda where the departure of line 4 is attested.
This morning the ceremony with the participation, among others, of the mayor Dario Nardella and the councilor for Toponymy Alessandro Martini, of the President of the Region Eugenio Giani, the vice president of the city council Maria Federica Giuliani and the sons of Morales Silvia and Nicola. “I am really very happy to be able to remember one of my illustrious predecessors – said the mayor Nardella – and I am also affirmed the mayor Nardella – and I also met a few days before his death, in November of last year we celebrated the 80th anniversary together Mario Primicerio’s birthday at Palazzo Vecchio. I called him to ask him whether to participate in this surprise for Primicerio and he did not hesitate even though his health was already frail. He came to Palazzo Vecchio and we celebrated Primicerio together and after just over two weeks Morales left us. Today it is right that Florence remember him with this toponym with a perennial link. Not only the square will bear his name but also the terminus of line 4 of the tramway which will be called Porta a Prato-piazza Giorgio Morales ”.
“The procedures don’t have such a quick time frame but we took action because we wanted to give a strong sign of how Morales left one really important footprint in our city and we succeeded exactly one year after his death – added the commissioner Martini -. Morales was a fan of politics, a very capable administrator, a man of culture but also a very popular figure among the citizens. This morning I took the flowers to his grave at the Rifredi cemetery on behalf of the Administration and it struck me as a man who was mayor of Florence and has done so many things for the city is buried in the midst of ordinary citizens. It is an important sign: a great man who rests among his people, a square named after him in his city forever “.
