The new Škoda E´City electric bus was presented yesterday at the 10th CZECHBUS Central European trade fair. This is a brand new electric bus model from the Škoda Transportation Group workshop. Prague will thus be the first city to run this modern and ecological electric bus, which does not produce emissions of exhaust gases and other harmful substances, contributes to a cleaner air and a more harmonious environment in the city, and Dopravní podnik hl. m of Prague (DPP) by its first operator. DPP has ordered a total of 14 fleets and plans to deploy them mainly on lines 154 to 213.

“Every day we work to improve our products and invest in the development of others. The new model of the Škoda E´City electric bus is a clear proof of that and I am very glad that the first city where it will run is Prague. Emission-free vehicles are a key part of modern transport and help reduce not only the carbon footprint but also operating carriers. Our electric bus will also provide many benefits to passengers. They will certainly appreciate the comfortable equipment – such as full-vehicle air conditioning, comfortable seats, a sophisticated information system and also a quiet ride. Thanks to the opportunistic charging system, the batteries will be replenished from the existing traction infrastructure during the day and then the batteries will be slowly charged and balanced overnight.“Said Petr Brzezina, President of the Škoda Transportation Group, on the occasion of the performance.
“We have promised that by 2024 there will be a fifth less emissions in Prague, by 2030 a third of buses will be powered by electric current and one of the steps is the purchase of new electric buses. My goal is for DPP to be the flagship among transport companies in the Czech Republic and to use modern 21st century technologies. Prague will become a city in which bus services within public transport will normally provide quiet, emission-free vehicles for alternative fuels, and by purchasing the first electric buses for Prague public transport, we will lease them to fulfill Prague’s Climate Commitment. We reduce traffic noise in Prague, use the cleaner air we breathe and improve the environment overall. I want Prague to be a friendly place to live and the DPP bus fleet will go against it,Explains Adam Scheinherr, Prague Deputy Mayor for Transport and Chairman of the DPP Supervisory Board.
“The purchase of new DPP electric buses fulfills not only its strategy and the concept of renewing the bus fleet with the use of alternative fuels, but also the climate commitment and the climate plan of the capital. m of Prague. It is also the purchase of the first fleet of our own electric buses after several years of testing and pilot operation of various types of electric buses, which we only rented. Thanks to that, we tried different technologies and gained valuable information. However, the introduction of fully emission-free vehicles is not just the purchase of these vehicles. It is also necessary for their operation to build the related supply and charging infrastructure, which is a demanding process that includes, among other things, land settlement, land and construction management and the process of construction and installation of technologies, including finding appropriate technical solutions. That’s why I’m glad that the deadlines are being met on all sides, and today we can introduce the first standard 12-meter DPP electric bus to the public. We are ready, I firmly believe that by the end of this year we will be able to take over the first vehicle and the first passengers will ride with it after the New Year. We expect the remaining 13 vehicles during February next year,“Adds Petr Witowski, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of DPP.

“This is the first delivery of electric buses, which we carry out in cooperation with our sister company Temsa. Her role in this case was only subcontracted. Based on the findings from previous projects, we proposed specific modifications to the existing solution from the solution that our sister company has for its own vehicles, and in Turkey the bodywork was mainly manufactured. To this we added the best of our production – complete electrical equipment, including batteries and pantograph – we provided the entire assembly and complete tests of the car in our Pilsen factory. Thanks to this cooperation, an ideal means of transport for public transport has been created,Describes Zdeněk Majer, senior vice president for sales at the Škoda Transportation Group.

Škoda E´City offers a unique solution with two-pole charging and a galvanically isolated charger on the car. In practice, this means that during the day, when the car is in operation, its traction battery is recharged from the existing infrastructure for tram or trolleybus lines planned in the future using the pantograph. DPP has the infrastructure for this type of recharging already prepared at the final stops Strašnická and Želivského. Charging will take place here for 15 to 30 minutes, which will replenish the total capacity of the battery, which will allow you to complete the next circuit on the line. The advantage of this solution is the ideal control of the car’s energy balance, and especially the low cost of the charging infrastructure. Electric buses equipped with this type of charging have a longer daily range and greater flexibility in deployment on different lines. In addition, Prague will receive advanced energy management of the entire vehicle fleet from the Škoda Transportation Group, which will enable cost-effective battery charging and extend battery life.
Interesting technical parameters
The new electric bus for DPP is of the Standard (Sd) type for city lines, has a length of 12 meters and a design speed of 80 km / h. Its exterior paint is in the new color style of Prague Integrated Transport (PID) vehicles and its technical specifications meet new PID quality standards. E´City is a fully low-floor emission-free battery vehicle that has a guaranteed range of more than 100 kilometers on a single charge for the entire life of the batteries, including heating or interior heating. The charging power is up to 150 kW and charging takes place using a two-pole pantograph located on the vehicle and an on-board galvanically isolated charger directly from the 600 V / 750 V DC network. It is also possible to use the option of charging the plug-in overnight at the depot from the socket. Air conditioning and heating are also solved purely electrically. The driver’s cab is closed due to higher safety requirements.
