The Netherlands in coefficient race: “That would be great especially for PSV and Ajax”
Ajax is already certain of wintering in the Champions League thanks to four group victories, but still has enough to play for on Wednesday evening against Besiktas. Arie van Os, treasurer of the Amsterdam club between 1989 and 2001, points to the considerable competition premium.
Every draw in the Champions League brings in more than nine tons and every win three times that. Van Os is a bit jealous of the amounts. “We also received profit premiums from UEFA in our time, but they were disproportionate to the amounts we have today,” he says in a statement. The Telegraph.
A victory in Istanbul yields 2.8 million euros. “The latter is almost a third of the budget of Go Ahead Eagles and a very welcome extra for Ajax in this corona time. For the Eredivisie, Ajax cannot resist going full throttle, because we will not play against PSV on Sunday, but against Sparta.”
Coefficient race
A good result from Ajax is also important for the coefficients. The Netherlands is on the heels of France and Portugal and if one of the two countries is finally overtaken, the numbers and two of the Eredivisie will qualify directly for the Champions League from 2023.
Van Os: “That would be great especially for PSV and Ajax, because you are more or less assured of forty million euros and you can really grow at that tournament.”
