Agrar – Berlin – 100,000 euros proceeds from the sale of game meat – economy
Berlin (dpa / bb) – 1800 wild boars are shot on average per year in the Berlin forests. There are also around 45 shot animals that belong to the fallow deer, a species of deer. This emerges from a response from the Senate to an FDP request. The larger red deer does not occur in Berlin.
The Berlin forests take an average of 105,000 euros per year from the sale of game meat. Most of the meat is sold through game dealers and directly to restaurants. Often a part is given to the hunters and consumed. According to the Senate, 260 to 270 hunters are involved in the shooting of game in Berlin.
The Senate wrote that the population of wild boars and female and male fallow deer cannot be precisely estimated. There is no data basis, neither on the basic stock nor on the increment. “In principle, the estimation of wild populations is fraught with great uncertainties.” The number of wild boars in particular varies a lot and depends on the weather and the food supply.
On the outskirts of Berlin, wild boars are considered a nuisance because they devastate gardens and parks. The warm winters and the lack of natural enemies ensure the survival of the numerous offspring. Wild boars are therefore not only specifically hunted in Berlin in order to limit the population. In Brandenburg, hunters shot around 90,000 wild boars last year. Because of the dangers posed by African swine fever, the number of deaths is to be reduced.
