On the territory of the capital city of Prague there are 84 cemeteries with a total area of more than 170 hectares. Their administration is divided between the city district, churches and most fall under the city organization Prague Cemetery Administration (SPH). In addition to large necropolises, there are also cemeteries of a local character; in addition to cemeteries that are seemingly insignificant, there are also places of memory of national importance. The manual for the creation of public spaces for Prague cemeteries, which is supposed to be a kind of guide on how to expand and care for cemeteries, was presented today by the councilor. m Prague Milena Johnová cemetery administrators.
In addition to the main function of cemeteries, which is burial and remembrance of the deceased, it names other functions and values of cemeteries: urban, environmental, cultural and architectural. The manual of his thesis accompanies many examples of good practice from cemeteries in the Czech Republic and abroad. An important part of the document prepared by the Institute of Planning and Development of the Capital m of Prague (IPR) in cooperation with the general public, there is also a catalog of cemeteries managed by SPH, which was developed in this scope for the first time.
“The manual is not an attempt by theorists to teach and authorize the right solutions. Through it, we fulfill the coordinating and methodological role of the capital. I would like those who decide on Prague cemeteries and who participate in their design to perceive the manual as an aid for thinking about daily care and for thinking about further development. For this reason, the material was also consulted with the cemetery administrators when it was created. I consider today’s meeting and discussion with the administrators to be very important, because it will help to understand and accept the manual. Only in this way can we expect the necessary change for the better in Prague’s cemeteries, “ says Milena John, Councilor for Social Policy and Health, who is also in charge of funeral services.
“I am glad that the city management has found the will to issue the manual. In the past, cemeteries and funerals were often on the periphery of interest. Today, the Cemetery Manual is even the second plug-in of a key city-wide concept – the Public Space Manual. I am also pleased with his appearance. It is not a regulatory tool, but rather an initiating and inspiring one. We have a lot of work to do with putting it into practice. I look forward to you,” adds Martin Červený, director of the Prague Cemeteries Administration.
“Prague finally has a documentary for an important area that has been neglected for a long time. Cemeteries in the capital, of which there are currently 84, often form a barrier, are not passable and care for them varies considerably. The manual aims to support and unify their development and show the possibility of improving these places as part of the public space. ” presents Ondřej Boháč, director of the Institute of Planning and Development of the Capital City of Prague m of Prague.
One of the examples where the creation of a new cemetery from the very beginning respects the principles mentioned in the manual presented today is the future Suchdol cemetery.
“Gardens with a cemetery near the chapel of St. Václav, that is the name of the project of a new cemetery, which our city district is now building. Jehoa started already in 2017, when we prepared an architectural-landscape project competition for the design. Thanks to the cooperation with Prague experts in the field of funeral services since the competition was entered, through its evaluation and project preparation, a cemetery complex is being created on the “green” meadow, where there will be room for both classic burial methods and a scattering meadow and space for pouring to the roots. supplies Petr Hejl, mayor of the Prague – Suchdol district.
